01 — What counts as an emergency
When to call us right away
If something in your mouth hurts, is bleeding, is swollen or just broke, it’s worth a call. Some problems can wait a day or two; others can cost you the tooth if you wait. Our team will ask a few quick questions and tell you how soon you should be seen.

Dental emergency or hospital ER?
Go to the emergency room or call 911 for a broken jaw, a serious head injury, uncontrolled bleeding, or swelling that affects your breathing, swallowing or vision. For almost everything else — tooth pain, a cracked tooth, a lost crown, an abscess that isn’t spreading — a dentist is the better choice. ERs can manage pain and infection, but they usually can’t fix the tooth itself, so you’d still need to see us.

What our emergency dental services include
We start with a focused exam and, if needed, an X-ray to find the source of the problem. The consult itself (exam only) is free. Before any treatment, your dentist explains what they see and your options, with costs, so you can decide. In many cases we can relieve the pain the same day — for example by treating an infected nerve, smoothing or bonding a broken tooth, recementing a crown or placing a temporary filling.
Common same-day treatments include root canal therapy to stop severe pain, tooth-colored bonding for chips, temporary or permanent crowns, extractions when a tooth can’t be saved, and denture repairs.
No insurance? You can still be seen
The emergency consult is free, and we accept credit cards, cash, checks and money orders. Ask about financing if you need more time to pay. We accept Florida Medicaid and most PPO and Medicare Advantage dental plans, and we’ll check your coverage while you’re here. See insurance & financing.

Medicaid and dental emergencies
We accept Florida Medicaid. For adults, Florida Medicaid dental plans focus on relieving pain and infection — exams, X-rays, extractions, draining an abscess and related care — while children under 21 have comprehensive dental coverage. Bring your Medicaid card; we’ll confirm your benefits and explain your options before treatment. Some nearby offices don’t accept Medicaid — if you’ve been turned away elsewhere, call us.
Dental emergencies after hours or on the weekend
Our office is open Monday through Friday. If something happens after hours: rinse gently with warm salt water, use a cold compress on the outside of your cheek, take an over-the-counter pain reliever as directed on the label, and protect any broken pieces or knocked-out teeth as described in the table above. Call us as soon as we open at 9 AM. Go to the ER or call 911 for spreading facial swelling, fever with swelling, trouble breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding or a jaw injury.
How to prevent dental emergencies
- Keep up with checkups — most toothaches start as small cavities or cracks we can fix early
- Wear a mouthguard for sports and a night guard if you grind your teeth
- Don’t chew ice, hard candy, pens or popcorn kernels
- Replace large old fillings that are cracking before the tooth breaks
- Don’t ignore mild sensitivity or a gum bump — they’re early warning signs

How much does an emergency visit cost?
The emergency consult (exam only) is free. X-rays and any treatment you choose are priced before we start, and your insurance is applied if you have it.
Do you take walk-ins?
Please call first at (305) 705-2748. Calling lets us hold a chair for you so you don’t wait.
Can a knocked-out tooth be saved?
Often, if you act fast. Handle the tooth by the crown, rinse it gently, and put it back in the socket or keep it in milk. Get to a dentist within about an hour. Baby teeth should not be put back in — call us for guidance.
What should I do about a toothache at night or on the weekend?
Rinse with warm salt water, use a cold compress and take an over-the-counter pain reliever as directed on the label. Call us when we open. If you have facial swelling that is spreading, fever, or trouble breathing or swallowing, go to the ER.
Is a cracked tooth an emergency?
If it hurts, is sharp or a piece broke off, yes — cracks tend to spread. We can often bond or crown the tooth before it splits further.
My crown fell off. Can you put it back on?
Often, yes. Bring the crown with you. If the crown and tooth are in good shape, we can clean and recement it. If not, we’ll discuss a new crown.
Do you repair dentures the same day?
We offer emergency denture repair. Depending on the break, some repairs can be done quickly, and others need a lab. Bring all the pieces.
Do you treat children’s dental emergencies?
Yes. We see kids and teens. Call us and describe what happened so we can advise you right away.
Does Medicaid cover emergency dental visits?
Florida Medicaid dental plans cover emergency care for adults to relieve pain and infection, including exams, X-rays and extractions, and children have comprehensive coverage. We accept Medicaid and will confirm your plan’s benefits before treatment.
Can I get a tooth pulled the same day?
Often, yes. If a tooth can’t be saved and extraction is the right choice, we can usually remove it at your emergency visit. We’ll always explain options for saving the tooth first.
What counts as a dental emergency?
Severe or throbbing tooth pain, facial or gum swelling, a knocked-out or loosened adult tooth, a broken tooth with sharp edges or pain, a lost crown, bleeding that won’t stop, and broken dentures you rely on to eat.
