Why choose professional teeth whitening?

Store-bought strips and kits use low-strength gel and one-size-fits-all trays, so results are slower and patchier, and gel can irritate your gums. Professional whitening uses stronger, dentist-supervised gel and trays made for your teeth, which means more noticeable, more even results — and someone to manage sensitivity if it happens.

At a glance

Just as important, we check your teeth first. Whitening doesn’t change the color of fillings, crowns or veneers, and it can’t fix a tooth that is dark because of decay or an old injury. We’ll tell you what to expect before you spend a dollar.

Whitening options

• Take-home whitening — custom-fit trays and professional gel you wear at home for a set time each day. Gradual, even and easy to touch up later.
• In-office whitening — a concentrated treatment in our chair for faster results, often followed by take-home trays to maintain them.

Is whitening safe?

When supervised by a dentist and used as directed, peroxide-based whitening is considered safe for most adults. The most common side effect is temporary tooth sensitivity, which usually fades within a few days. We can adjust the gel strength and wear time and recommend a desensitizing toothpaste. We generally recommend postponing whitening during pregnancy and nursing, and we treat cavities and gum problems first.

Keeping your smile bright

Results can last a year or more depending on your habits. Rinse after coffee, tea, red wine and dark sauces, don’t smoke, keep up your cleanings, and use your trays for an occasional touch-up.

Whitening before other cosmetic work

If you’re planning bonding, veneers or crowns on front teeth, whiten first. New restorations are matched to your whitened shade, so everything blends.

In-office vs. take-home whitening

Whitening if you have sensitive teeth

Sensitive teeth can usually still be whitened with a gentler plan: lower-concentration gel, shorter wear times, breaks between sessions and a desensitizing toothpaste before and during treatment. We’ll first check for cavities or exposed roots that could make whitening uncomfortable.
