Types of dentures

Dentures are custom-made replacement teeth. A modern denture looks far more natural than they used to, and there are several ways to keep them secure. The right choice depends on how many teeth you’re missing, the health of your remaining teeth and gums, and your budget.

• Complete (full) dentures — replace all the teeth in the upper or lower jaw.
• Partial dentures — fill gaps when some natural teeth remain, clasping to them for support.
• Immediate dentures — made in advance and placed the same day teeth are removed, so you’re never without teeth while you heal.

Dentures vs. implant-supported dentures

A traditional lower denture in particular can move when you chew, because it rests only on the gums. Implant-supported dentures attach to a few implants placed in the jaw, so they stay in place and don’t need adhesive. They also help preserve the jawbone. If you’re getting new teeth, ask Dr. B whether implants could be added now or later.

Getting used to a new denture

It’s normal for a new denture to feel bulky at first. Speaking and eating get easier within a few weeks. Start with soft foods cut into small pieces, chew on both sides at once, and read or sing out loud to practice speaking. Sore spots are common early on — come in for an adjustment rather than putting up with them.

Caring for your denture

• Rinse after meals and brush your denture daily with a soft brush and non-abrasive cleaner (not regular toothpaste).
• Soak them overnight in water or a denture-soaking solution so they don’t dry out and warp.
• Brush your gums, tongue and any natural teeth every day.
• Handle your denture over a towel or a sink of water in case you drop them.
• See us once a year for an exam and fit check — gums and bone change over time.

If you need teeth removed first

Many patients need a few remaining teeth taken out first. With immediate dentures, we take impressions ahead of time so your new teeth are ready the day of the extractions — you leave with teeth, not gaps. Your gums shrink as they heal over the following months, so immediate dentures need adjustments and usually a reline once healing is complete.

Signs your denture needs attention

• They slip, click or rock when you talk or chew
• You need more and more adhesive to keep them in
• Sore spots, cracked corners of the mouth or gum irritation
• Chipped, worn or broken teeth on the denture
• Your face looks more sunken than it used to

Any of these is a reason to come in. Often an adjustment or reline solves it; sometimes it’s time for a new denture or a switch to implant support.

Relines, repairs and replacements

As your jaw changes, a denture can loosen. A reline reshapes the fitting surface so it hugs your gums again. We also offer emergency denture repair for cracks, broken teeth and fractures — bring every piece and don’t use household glue. Most sets eventually need replacing as the teeth wear and the fit changes.

Paying for dentures

Florida Medicaid covers full and partial sets for adults, and many PPO and Medicare Advantage dental plans help pay for them too. We accept Medicaid and work with most Medicare Advantage plans, including Aetna Medicare and Humana Medicare, and we’ll verify your coverage before we start. Financing is also available. Dentures with Florida Medicaid

Florida Medicaid dental plans cover complete and partial dentures for adults, and many of our denture patients use Medicaid. Plans set rules on how often a denture can be replaced and may require approval first, so we check your benefits and handle the paperwork. If you need teeth removed first, extractions are generally covered too.

Soft relines, hard relines and rebases

A hard reline reshapes the fitting surface of your denture in a firm acrylic to match your gums. A soft reline uses a cushioned material for sore or thin gums. A rebase replaces the whole pink base while keeping the teeth. We’ll recommend the one that fits your situation.

How many implants hold a snap-in denture?

A lower snap-in denture is commonly held by two or more implants; an upper denture usually needs more because the bone is softer. Snap-in options stop slipping, don’t need adhesive and help preserve the jawbone. See implant options.
