01 — The basics

What is dental ozone therapy?

Ozone (O₃) is oxygen with an extra atom. That extra atom makes it very reactive, which is why ozone has been studied for disinfecting surfaces, water and — in dentistry — the bacteria involved in tooth decay and gum disease. In a dental office, medical-grade ozone is generated from pure oxygen and applied in a controlled way: as a gas to a specific tooth, or as ozonated water or oil.

How we may use ozone

• During fillings — to disinfect the prepared tooth before the composite is placed
• With cleanings and gum care — ozonated water as a rinse or irrigant around inflamed gums
• In root canal treatment — as an additional disinfection step inside the canals
• For sensitive teeth and early decay — as part of a minimally invasive plan
• For mouth sores and healing sites — ozonated oil applied to soft tissue

What the evidence says

Studies of ozone in dentistry show promising antimicrobial effects, but results vary and the research is still developing. That’s why we use ozone as an adjunct — together with cleanings, fillings, root canals and good home care — and not as a stand-alone cure. Dr. B will tell you when she thinks ozone adds value for your situation and when it doesn’t.

Is ozone therapy safe?

In dentistry, ozone is used in small, controlled amounts with equipment designed to keep it where it belongs — on the tooth or tissue being treated. Ozone gas should not be inhaled, so it is applied with suction and sealed delivery. Most patients feel nothing more than a slight fizzing or a clean smell.

Cost and insurance

Dental insurance usually doesn’t list ozone as a separate covered service. When it’s used as part of a filling, cleaning or root canal, we’ll tell you if there’s any additional cost before we begin.
